The reason the reflecting pools are so deep is because that’s how far into the ground the original WTC buildings were. According to the info graphic, the pools sit in the “footprints” of the original WTC buildings and each one contains over a 30-foot drop. Because the pools are in the same place as the original WTC buildings, it only makes sense to believe that the original foundations were used.
